Foster Care Summer Splashby JP Brumfield on 08/04/10 Bright and early, last Saturday morning, volunteers arrived at the Healing Place Athletics Center eager to serve! Some were sent to inflate helium balloons, hang banners, fill swimming pools, arrange tarp for slip-n-slides, cook hamburgers and hot dogs, set up tables and sound equipment, and fill super-soakers! About twenty of our friends visiting from GUTS Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma (http://www.gutschurch.com) headed up the water games and church service, complete with an inflatable water slide, 100 ft. slip-n-slide obstacle course, sponge dodge ball, dance competitions, giveaways, encouraging message from a former college baseball player, and more.
With the help of this amazing team and our volunteers, we were able to throw a celebration for fifty children and teenagers who are living under the foster care system in our city. The purpose of this day was to give these amazing kids an opportunity to meet people who truly care about them, to hear about and receive a picture of God’s love for them, and to simply enjoy being a kid. We know the challenges these children face are almost unimaginable and they are often forced to encounter situations more serious than we can fathom. However, all of those challenges and trials were put aside for the day and these children were able to be carefree! Many joyful conversations, thousands of smiles, roars of laughter, excited hugs, and loads of energy were the elements of this day- all for the glory of God. Not only were the children impacted, but so were the group home staff as well as our own Healing Place staff and volunteers.
At the end of the day each child was sent home with a brand new booksack full of supplies ready to begin the new school year. We pray that God will continue working in the hearts of these kids and that His calling upon each of their lives will become undeniable within them.
Thanks to everyone who donated school supplies and booksacks. We were able to give away a total of 159 booksacks to the chlldren!
